PMDM GmbH was founded on February 1, 1991, as a subsidiary of MinebeaMitsumi Inc. Tokyo to promote new developments in spindle motors for computer hard disks and to be successful in the world market with their production and sales.
Due to successful developments in hard drive motor technology and manufacturing and measurement technology from Germany, combined with precision parts manufacturing and mass production know-how from Japan, PMDM was able to secure a global name in the computer industry. The company was also able to expand its global market share for HDD motors. Today, PMDM /MinebeaMitsumi has its plants located in Southeast Asia, and has a production capacity of about 6 to 9 million HDD motors per month, making it the second largest supplier worldwide.
Driven by its success in the hard disk motor sector, PMDM has continuously expanded its business areas since the mid-90s. In 2000, the Research and Development Center was created in Villingen-Schwenningen, and another building was added on in 2004. The employees of PMDM are always working on developing the next spindle motors, BLDC motors, energy harvesting systems, piezo linear actuators, motors with FDB technology, and many other new innovations.
